If your air conditioner or furnace is on the fritz, you will need the help of a qualified HVAC contractor to fix the issue and get your system back up and running again. Unfortunately, not all contractors are equally skilled, or equally honest, so it’s important to do your research and vet your candidates before you decide who to hire. Our team at Dunlow Mechanical has extensive experience in the HVAC industry, and in this article, we will go over a few red flags you should watch out for when searching for an HVAC contractor—if you notice any of these things, we recommend you skip that candidate and keep looking.

HVAC Contractor Red Flags

  • No Insurance. If an HVAC contractor does not have insurance, you shouldn’t hire them. Reputable contractors understand that things can go wrong, regardless of how experienced they are, and they prepare for that possibility by carrying insurance to cover any damages, repairs, or injuries that may arise during the course of the project.
  • No License. Similarly, you shouldn’t hire an HVAC contractor if they can’t prove that they are properly licensed. An HVAC contractor’s license shows that they have completed the necessary training to do the job right and that they agree to follow the government regulations concerning the work needed.
  • No Professionalism. Thirdly, if an HVAC contractor does not present a professional image or conduct themselves in a professional manner, you should look for one who does. Signs of an unprofessional attitude include a lack of a company uniform, lack of punctuality, and a disrespectful tone when speaking to you.
